WAP FORUM MOMENTUM ACCELERATES - 23 NEW COMPANIES JOIN IN FOUR MONTHS

Membership Now 60 Companies Strong

LONDON, United Kingdom - (8 September 1998) - The Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Forum (www.wapforum.org) today announced that membership has expanded to include 60 leading industry companies. The WAP specification provides the basis for a unified worldwide standard---for providing wireless information access from handheld devices--which ensures solutions from multiple providers work consistently for end-users on all networks. General WAP Forum membership was opened in January 1998. By May 1998, 37 companies had united to contribute to the Wireless Application Protocol efforts. In the last four months 23 additional companies have joined the WAP Forum and are introduced subsequently.

The WAP Forum membership now includes manufacturers that represent the majority of the worldwide wireless infrastructure and handset markets, as well as the largest, and many of the most innovative wireless network operators--implementing all network protocols. The substantial and continued growth of the WAP Forum membership provides an influential basis for the evolution of the WAP specification and signifies broad industry commitment to the creation of a worldwide open standard for wireless Internet access on handheld devices.

The WAP Forum also announced the election of officers and the expansion of the Board, which includes a strong cross section of operators and suppliers. The following members now comprise the Board:

Mr. Chuck Parrish (WAP board chairman), executive vice president,
Unwired Planet (now Phone.com), Inc.

Mr. Gregory G. Williams (WAP board vice chairman), vice president,
Wireless Systems, SBC Communications, Inc.

Dr. Alain C. Briancon, vice president & director,
Internet & Networking Group,Motorola Limited

Mr. Christophe Francois, product development director,
CEGETEL / SFR

Dr. Ajei S. Gopal, director of technology,
Pervasive Computing, IBM Corporation

Mr. Joakim Nelson, director, Strategic Product Management,
Ericsson Mobile Communications

Mr. Noritake Okada, senior engineer,
Matsushita Communication Industrial Co., Ltd.

Mr. Francis Pinault, system & architecture manager,
Professional & Consumer Division, Alcatel

Mr. Paul Schofield, senior product manager,
Wireless Data, Products & Marketing, Telstra Corporation Ltd.

Mr. Mikko Terho, vice president, Wireless Data,
Nokia Mobile Phones

"The expansion of the WAP Forum demonstrates the powerful industry consensus and endorsement of WAP as the worldwide open standard for delivering information to wireless handheld devices," said the WAP Forum's newly elected chairman, Chuck Parrish. "The presence on the Board of leading wireless operators and industry suppliers confirms WAP's strong market position."

"SBC Communications sees WAP as extremely strategic to the future of the wireless industry," said Gregory G. Williams, the WAP Forum's newly elected vice chairman. "As an operator of multiple protocols, SBC is in a unique position to understand the importance of a wireless protocol that can be leveraged across all of the wireless technologies, and I look forward to helping the wireless industry, especially the carriers, capitalize on new services enabled by WAP."

About the WAP Forum

The Wireless Application Protocol specifies Internet content and advanced telephony services access on digital mobile phones and other wireless terminals. The WAP Forum has published a global wireless protocol specification for all wireless networks that will be contributed to appropriate standards bodies. Version 1.0 of the Wireless Application Protocol specification is available for download at www.wapforum.org. WAP enables manufacturers, network operators, content providers and application developers to offer compatible products and secure services on all digital devices and networks resulting in greater economies of scale and universal access to information. WAP Forum membership is open to all industry participants. Details and the member application form are available at www.wapforum.org.
