Nokia and Spyglass Form Partnership for Distribution of Nokia WAP Browser Technology

(July 7, 1999) - Nokia Wireless Software Solutions announced today that it has executed a worldwide distribution agreement with Spyglass Inc. that is intended to accelerate the acceptance and implementation of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) standard. The agreement empowers Spyglass to license the Nokia WAP Browser to manufacturers of mobile phones, personal digital assistants (PDA), and other devices that rely on wireless communications. Spyglass will also provide engineering services to manufacturers for the customization and integration of the Nokia WAP Browser with the manufacturer's platform.

WAP is an open global standard for communication between a mobile handset and the Internet or other computer application. WAP-based technology makes possible the design of advanced, interactive and real-time mobile services, such as mobile banking or Internet-based news services, which can be used with digital mobile phones or other mobile devices. The WAP specification enables solutions from various suppliers to inter-operate and work consistently for end-users on wireless digital networks. For more information about WAP, please see www.wapforum.org.

The Nokia WAP Browser is an implementation of version 1.1 of the WAP specification published by the WAP Forum in June. The Nokia browser software provides a WML user agent to display content created with the wireless markup language (WML), WMLScript engine for execution of applications, support for secure data transmission using WTLS, and the WAP Protocol Stack for transporting data over wireless bearer services. The browser implementation will be fully WAP compliant, as defined by the WAP Forum. Key features of the Nokia WAP Browser are its small memory footprint and open architecture with documented APIs that enable the development of custom user interfaces and the integration with multiple hardware platforms, operating systems, and input strategies. The well-defined set of APIs makes the browser highly portable.

"Nokia has chosen Spyglass to distribute our browser because their expertise in embedded systems and browser technologies enables it to build fully differentiated solutions for terminal manufacturers. In addition, our companies share a strong commitment to promote the WAP standard," said Gerhard Romen, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Nokia Wireless Software Solutions. "We have enjoyed working with Nokia within the WAP Forum as well as on previous software projects, and we are excited to be working together now at the beginning of what we believe will be the rapid growth of smartphones," said Jack Armstrong, Vice President of Mobile Data Services for Spyglass. "The Nokia WAP Browser is a well designed, pure implementation of the WAP standard that we will be able to port to a variety of mobile devices."
