21st June 1999 - Apion, a Belfast, Northern Ireland based telecoms software company, has signed a contract with Sonera Ltd of Finland for the purchase of Apions first to market Binnian WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) Gateway product.

The Apion Binnian WAP Gateway will give Sonera, a mobile telephony operator in Finland, the ability to provide an internet service accessible to the hand-sets of its customers. Apion was first to market with this Gateway product. Denis Murphy, Apions Managing Director said:

"Apions Binnian WAP Gateway will help to move the level of service mobile operators can offer customers onto a different plane. We at Apion believe that WAP will become the de facto mechanism for delivery of mobile value added services in the new millennium"

Both Sonera and Apion are members of the WAP Forum which is an industry consortium driving WAP viability and acceptance. The WAP Forum has established specifications for an advanced protocol that works across different wireless network devices and standards internationally.
