CNN Interactive Extend CNN Mobile News Service to the United States

ATLANTA, July 28, 1999 -- BellSouth First to Offer CNN Mobile to U.S. Consumers CNN Interactive and BellSouth are teaming up to introduce CNN Mobile to the United States.  Devised and distributed by CNN Interactive, CNN Mobile is a 24-hour news service for digital mobile phones.  CNN Mobile is one of BellSouth's initial major mass market wireless data services offered to its more than 5 million customers.  BellSouth will be the first wireless phone service provider to offer CNN Mobile in the United States.

CNN Mobile was the first mobile telephone news and information service available globally with targeted regional content.  Launched in February, CNN Mobile began with nine charter sponsors in seven European and Asian countries.  It is the world's first global value-added service to be built on the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP).  CNN Interactive commercially licenses and markets CNN Mobile worldwide.

"We are pleased that BellSouth has chosen to offer its customers CNN Mobile, the newest way for consumers to access news from the brand they trust," said Scott Woelfel, CNN senior vice president, general manager and editor in chief, CNN Interactive.  "CNN has developed a comprehensive news service that not only takes advantage of existing technologies, but will also evolve as mobile phone technology evolves.  CNN Mobile will be available to more than 30 million subscribers worldwide by the end of the year."

Stan Hamm, president, BellSouth Mobile Systems Group said "BellSouth is delighted to be first to the U.S. market with the CNN Mobile news service.  As we continue to broaden the capabilities of our digital network, we are able to provide these valuable services to our customers.  This is the first of many wireless data services we plan to introduce to help our customers simplify their lives and improve information access from anywhere."

BellSouth will deliver the mobile news service by using its system's short messaging service (SMS) capabilities.  BellSouth's digital wireless customers will be able to access CNN Mobile on their mobile phones without increasing airtime usage.

Produced by the same team responsible for the award-winning Web site CNN.com, CNN Mobile features: breaking news, U.S. and world news; weather forecasts; business news and market updates; sports news and scores; entertainment news; and features.  CNN Interactive updates the CNN Mobile service 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  News headlines and market information are updated every 30 minutes, and sports scores and weather forecasts are updated regularly throughout the day.  Breaking news is delivered immediately.

CNN Mobile's content is optimized for SMS delivery and also is WAP compliant.  Operators may allow customers to access the service via SMS or may choose to push the latest CNN news and information to their customers.  The use of WAP technology will allow CNN Interactive to develop multimedia content to be delivered to the screens of WAP mobile phone devices.  WAP is an open and global standard, which is optimized to deliver value-added services to digital mobile phones via wireless networks.  The CNN Mobile service is independent of mobile phone manufacturer, gateway server manufacturer or network provider.

CNN Mobile leverages CNN's worldwide newsgathering organization encompassing more than 3,500 news professionals in 34 bureaus and more than 750 broadcast affiliates worldwide.  A dedicated team of journalists produces the service from CNN Interactive's newsroom in Atlanta and in CNN's London bureau.

CNN Mobile's nine charter operators in Europe were EuroTel Praha (Czech Republic), Orange Israel, Sonera (Finland), Sonofon (Denmark) and Telia (Sweden); and in Asia, M1 (Singapore), Hongkong Telecom, New World Mobility and SmarTone (Hong Kong).

BellSouth's wireless companies, BellSouth Mobility (BMI), BellSouth Mobility DCS and American Cellular Communications Corporation (ACC), provide wireless communications services to 5.2 million customers in 12 states.  BMI operates with its partners in eight Southeastern states.  BellSouth Mobility DCS launched service in 1996 and became the first company in the Southeast and the third company in the United States to introduce the latest in PCS technology in North Carolina, South Carolina, East Tennessee and eastern Georgia.  ACC markets operate under a variety of names in California, Texas and Virginia and as Cellular One in Indiana.  Visit us on the Web at www.bellsouthmobility.com or www.bellsouthdcs.com.

CNN Interactive is responsible for the award-winning news site CNN.com, as well as seven other Web sites and the distribution of CNN news content via other distribution platforms such as PageNet pagers, PointCast and iMagic's PowerPhones.  In February 1999, CNN Interactive launched CNN Mobile, the most comprehensive and advanced 24-hour global and pan-regional news and information service for GSM mobile phones, with nine charter operators in Europe and Asia. The CNN Web sites generate more traffic and attract more unduplicated Internet users than any other company's general news and information Web sites.  The CNN Web sites have averaged more than 555 million page impressions a month during 1999 and have served a total of 3.3 billion page impressions during the first six months of the year.
