New WAP Forum Board Officials Selected

Jerry Upton, VP of Internet Software and Content Group for Motorola, Appointed Chairman of WAP Forum

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. -- June 25, 2001 --The WAP Forum(TM) the industry association that is responsible for developing and fostering the growth of the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), today announced the results of the 2001 Board of Directors election. Members of the WAP Forum re-elected Jon Prial of IBM and Ikuyoshi Inoue of KDDI to the Board of Directors and elected Dave Williams of Cingular Wireless and Maasaki Ohara of NEC to the Board for their first term. The Board of Directors elected Jerry Upton, VP of Motorolas Internet Software and Content Group, as Chairman of the Board; Dave Williams, VP of Strategic Planning for Cingular Wireless, as Vice Chairman; and John Yuzdepski, VP and General Manager of Sprintpcs.com for Sprint PCS, as Treasurer.

Upton is enthusiastic about the future of WAP. "As an original founding director of the WAP Forum, I am honored to be appointed Chairman," said Upton. "In this new role, I am looking forward to collaborating with the members and other organizations to enhance the WAP specification as it evolves as the only worldwide open, non-proprietary wireless specification for accessing Internet-based services via wireless devices.

In his role at Motorola, Upton drives the wireless Internet strategy for the Internet Software and Content Group. His responsibilities include identifying and executing strategic investments and acquisitions worldwide. Previously at Motorola, Upton has served in a variety of other senior roles, including Vice President & General Manager of Motorola Personal Information Solutions, Smart & Connected Products, Platform Software AirMobile Software Products and Air Ventures, positions in the Corporate Strategy office and Land Mobile Products Sector, as well as manager of U.S. Vertical Markets Marketing. He brings more than 20 years of experience in the mobile communications industry to the WAP Forum.

In Williams role of Vice President of Strategic Planning of Cingular Wireless, he directs strategic network planning initiatives, oversees involvement in standards bodies and coordinates technical development of future products and services. Additionally, Williams currently serves as Chairman of GSM North America, CTO committee, and is also the Chairman of the Ericsson GSM Americas user group. Prior to joining Cingular Wireless, Williams was with Pacific Bell Wireless as Executive Vice President of Network Technology and previously Vice President of Network Operations. Williams also held various other management roles with SBC Wireless and European Wireless carriers.

In Yuzdepskis role as Vice President & General Manager of Sprintpcs.com, the Internet Business Unit of Sprint PCS, he has responsibility for eCommerce, eCRM, content, and development of Sprint PCSs wireless and wired Internet application and portal initiatives. He was previously Vice President of Product Management and Development for Sprint PCS. Prior to joining Sprint PCS, Yuzdepski was responsible for global marketing and business development at Glenayre Technologies Wireless Messaging Group, a worldwide supplier of wireless messaging infrastructure. Previously, he held staff and management positions in the defense, aerospace, and early Internet industries.
