WAP FORUM GATHERING NOMINATIONS

Innovative WAP Applications, Services to be Lauded at Conference in Spain

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. Aug. 21, 2000 The WAP Forum announced today that it is accepting nominations for the first official W@P AwardsTM, to be presented Nov. 27 at the WAP Congress 2000 in Seville, Spain. The awards, jointly hosted by the WAP Forum and IBC Conferences Worldwide, are designed to recognize the achievements and technological advances of commercially available WAP applications and services around the world.
A panel of independent judges from the wireless and Internet industries will choose finalists and winners in three categories: Best use of WAP in a business application; best use of WAP in a consumer application; a WAP service providers award. WAP Forum CEO Scott Goldman will also present a CEOs award for innovation in WAP.
The WAP industry is growing so rapidly that we wanted a way to recognize the contributions that developers, content providers and operators have made, Goldman said. The W@P Awards program is designed to showcase some of the most creative and unique real-world applications and services that have made WAP so incredibly popular in such a short time.
At the Seville ceremony, awards will be presented in the following categories:
The best use of WAP in a business application award will go to the individual or company whose application can best solve a specific problem in the enterprise, increase revenues, and/or reduce costs.
The best use of WAP in a consumer application award will be presented to the company or individual whose application can best capitalize on WAPs personalization capabilities, save time, give the user greater control, or be lifestyle-enhancing.
The service providers award will be awarded to the WAP service provider whose WAP-based service is easy to use, has a successful business model, and has achieved significant market acceptance.
The CEOs award for innovation in WAP will be awarded at the WAP Forum CEOs discretion.
Judges will include Bridget Cosgrave of ETSI, Geoff Johnson of Gartner Group/Dataquest, Iain Gillot of International Data Corporation, Danny Williams of Mobile Internet, William Farrell of Morgan Stanley Dean Witter, freelance journalist Danyll Wills, Mark Desautels of Wireless Data Forum, and Brad Smith of Wireless Week Magazine.
