MobileOne and Cable & Wireless HKT Launch the Worlds First WAP Roaming Service

SINGAPORE, 5 July 2000 MobileOne (M1) and Cable & Wireless HKT announced today that the two companies jointly launch the worlds first WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) roaming service. It enables customers of the two companies to access the same WAP portal service whether they are in Singapore or Hong Kong.

With the WAP roaming service, M1s WAP customers travelling in Hong Kong can enjoy Mi World, M1s wireless portal. They can also log onto the Cable & Wireless HKT mobile network to enjoy its wireless portal service i.Menu. Similarly, the same roaming capabilities are available to Cable & Wireless HKTs customers travelling in Singapore, who can access both i.Menu and Mi World. In both cases, roaming customers will only be charged the local airtime rates as compared to IDD rates in regular roaming service.

We will be looking at establishing similar WAP roaming arrangements with our roaming partners in the region and elsewhere so that our WAP customers will continue to enjoy Mi World services at reasonable cost even when they travel. This is in line with our objective of not only providing the best ever content for Mi World but also making it easily and conveniently accessible in every way possible, said M1s Chief Executive Officer, Neil Montefiore.

William Cheung, Executive Director, Local Network and Mobile Services of Cable & Wireless HKT, said, We are happy to partner with MobileOne in kicking off our WAP roaming service. Cable & Wireless HKT have been striving to enhance the content and accessibility of i.Menu, and we are working to expand the service to other major roaming countries.
