SYBASE JOINS WAP FORUM TO DRIVE E-BUSINESS APPLICATIONS FOR WIRELESS INFORMATION DEVICES

Industry Leader in Mobile Computing Solutions to Help Define WAP Standards for Local Data Storage and Enterprise Synchronization

Emeryville, Calif., November 30, 1999 - Sybase, Inc. (Nasdaq: SYBS) today announced that it has joined the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) Forum, the industry association focused on developing information and telephony services for digital mobile phones and other wireless terminals. As the provider of the world's leading mobile database and synchronization technology, SQL Anywhere Studio, Sybase brings to the WAP Forum valuable market expertise in extending enterprise information to mobile users. As a part of the WAP Forum, Sybase will work with other Forum members to define the standards for wireless e-Business applications.

These standards complement Sybase's current ability to deliver dynamic Internet content-including personalized enterprise portals-to WAP-enabled microbrowsers via Wireless Markup Language (WML). With today's announcement, Sybase plans to extend its WAP support to fuel a new class of wireless e-Business applications that do not require a continuous wireless connection. This will help mobile users such as field service engineers address the unique characteristics of wireless computing, which include variable coverage, limited data transfer rates, memory-constrained devices and power consumption issues.

"A key focus of Sybase's e-Anywhere strategy is to empower customers to easily and securely perform e-Business transactions from wireless devices," said Terry Stepien, senior vice president and general manager, Sybase's Mobile and Embedded Computing division. "We believe that the development of industry standards is key to this effort, and we are pleased to be joining the WAP Forum to extend its work in this area."

"We are excited to have Sybase join the WAP Forum," said Greg Williams, board chairman of the WAP Forum. "Sybase and the WAP Forum share a common goal - to enable users to use wireless devices as extensions of the corporate enterprise. Sybase's experience in the mobile database and synchronization market will be a valuable asset in the development of WAP standards for wireless e-Business applications."

Sybase's SQL Anywhere Studio: Optimized for Wireless e-Business

Sybase SQL Anywhere Studio is driving the development of a new class of wireless e-Business applications. SQL Anywhere enables local information storage on small footprint devicesenabling users to reliably enter data and conduct e-Business transactions even while they are not connected to the Internet or corporate intranet. When convenient, they can then utilize their wireless connection to synchronize with the enterprise. Because the information is stored locally, only changed information needs to be synchronized, reducing the time and costs associated with sending large volumes of data over a wireless network.

About Sybase's Mobile and Embedded Computing Division

Sybase's Mobile and Embedded Computing Division is committed to helping organizations realize the promise of "information anywhere." Enabling wireless data storage and synchronization is a important part of Sybase's recently announced e-Anywhere initiative, which addresses the synchronization, collection, and distribution of an enterprise's e-Business information at any time, from any location. According to GartnerGroup's Dataquest, Sybase is the mobile database market leader for the third consecutive year with 55% marketshare.
