Nokia Artus Developers Program forms a valuable channel between developers and operators to offer Value Added Services

November 30, 1999

The Nokia Artus Developers Program, covering Nokia Networks' developer activities, has advanced to now play a major role in bringing top developers and Nokia operator customers together to offer concrete WAP applications and other value-added services (VAS).

The core intent is to help application developers work together with Nokia operator customers that are increasingly seeking commercial agreements with developers. It currently supports the development of WAP, Smart Messaging, and Computer Interface to Message Distribution (CIMD).

The Nokia Artus Developers Program is aimed at application developers, content providers, content packagers and system integrators who are developing mobile VAS, with an interest in working with Nokia operator customers as well as optimizing their services for Nokia products and technologies. The Program now includes over one hundred developers. Significantly, a large proportion of these already have attractive and verified services optimized for Nokia products, such as the Nokia Artus Messaging Platform which serves as Nokia's WAP gateway solution for the operator market. This means that an operator, today, can step into commercial partnerships with Nokia partners, and include attractive VAS in its service offering strategy.

The Nokia Artus Developers Program includes a wide range of applications optimal for Nokia products ranging from weather and travel services, currency converters, dictionaries, E-mail, gaming, and E-commerce.

Developers are offered access to a development environment, development tools as well as a window to operators seeking commercial partnerships. Juha Kilpinen, Director of Product Development, Finnish Meteorological Institute, says "One of our major benefits in the Program has been the fact that it has supported us all the way from service development to actual commercialization strengthening our weather service offering towards operators."

David Townsend, Managing Director, Peramon Technology Ltd., states "Being an active partner of the Nokia Artus Developers Program offers us a direct marketing channel to operators, and the opportunity to develop our services and have them verified to work with the Nokia Artus Messaging Platform. We look forward to offering our innovative wireless E-mail solution, Lexicos, to many leading Nokia operator customers."

Nokia's newly established Customer Operations' unit, Systems Integration, plays an increasingly important role in facilitating the Nokia Artus Developers Program. Systems Integration unit will integrate different applications into operator's ISP platform including service provisioning and billing based on transaction or content. According to Ari Lehtoranta,Vice President Systems Integration, this means that operator will be able to provide new services to their end users very fast. Systems Integration will collect local content offering and utilize partner services of the Developers Program when building an offer to an operator.

With the wide adoption of VAS, the Nokia Artus Developers Program will further strengthen its position to include many more valuable developers, and it is about to expand to other regions, such as the US, China and Japan, in the near future. These regional Nokia Artus Developers Programs will have their own application development infrastructure and support, but for verified applications, common marketing channels of the Program will be utilized.

Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, fixed and IP networks including related services. It also supplies multimedia terminals and computer displays.
