Nokia plans to put the Internet in every pocket

At the forefront of WAP product and end-to-end solution development

(September 22, 1999) - Nokia has chosen PCS '99 to showcase and demonstrate its Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) 1.1 compliant solutions, which enable secure access and instant interaction with Internet/intranet information and other advanced telephony services.

Nokia, a driving force behind the WAP initiative and a founding member of the WAP Forum - an Industry Association of over 90 members - continues to lead the market by being the first manufacturer to provide end-to-end solutions for WAP 1.1. At PCS'99 Nokia will feature new products that enhance its leading wireless solutions.

The Internet goes mobile
Nokia today will unveil two new products for the Nokia 7100 Series: Nokia 7190 for GSM 1900 and Nokia 7160 for tri-mode AMPS / TDMA 800 / TDMA 1900 available during the first half of 2000. Nokia 7100 Series is a new line of sleek media phones designed to enable easy access to Internet content. With a Nokia-developed WAP 1.1. compliant microbrowser, the 4.9 oz Nokia 7100 Series media phones can access personalized information services via the Internet (WAP 1.1 supports images). These services can include news, weather reports, stock prices, e-mail, and flight schedules or wireless banking and electronic commerce. To demonstrate some of the real benefits of these value added services, Nokia and CNN today will announce extension of CNN Mobile to the Americas. CNN Mobile is a wireless news service that can be conveniently accessed with the Nokia 7100 Series phones.

Opportunities go far beyond voice
WAP enables wireless operators to implement value-added messaging services on top of their existing voice telephony. Nokia will demonstrate its WAP solution for carriers, the Nokia Artuse Messaging Platform. Functioning as a WAP gateway where users are able to access services from WAP-enabled devices through a variety of bearers, operators can easily provision services by providing a homepage with hyperlinks to the services they are offering.

The world is going mobile, how about your business? Solutions for the corporate customer
Nokia will demonstrate the first WAP server that enables corporations to offer Internet- or Intranet-based information and services to their customers, business partners and employees through their mobile phones. IBM, Nokia and Sabre also will demonstrate their pilot project designed to offer a real-time, interactive service that will allow travelers to monitor travel plans, initiate changes and receive updates from airlines anywhere, anytime via their mobile phones.
