Telia, Oracle and Nokia in the world's first public WAP test

- Premiere of Telia's WAP portal MyDOF

(16 September, 1999) - With MyDOF and Nokia 7110, WAP will become a reality for the first time. Initially, a large number of Telia customers subscribing to DOF will be given access to the WAP portal at no extra cost, in an exclusive test of Nokia's WAP telephone 7110. MyDOF provides services from companies such as FreningsSparbanken, Sandrew Metronome, Passagen, Posten, SJ, CNN and Nordnet.

DOF is a GSM subscription that is integrated with the Internet, and is aimed at people who want to use their mobile phones for more than just making phone calls. Telia's WAP portal MyDOF offers some of the most popular information and transaction services from the Internet, adapted for WAP telephones. Using MyDOF, you can, among other things, do bank business via FreningsSparbanken, book railway tickets via SJ, find information in the Yellow Pages, in Allt om Stockholm and in Citikey, and have access to news from CNN, Aftonbladet and TV4.

- We have developed an advanced WAP portal, and we are now putting it at the disposal of our customers for testing, says Lars Persson, Vice President, Telia Mobile. Also, this is the first public test of Nokia's WAP telephone, another reason why we feel very proud.

DOF customers will be test pilots
The pilot test with a large number of DOF subscribers will start in the middle of September, with the new Nokia 7110 as the test telephone. The test will continue at least till the end of the year. When the WAP telephones are available on the market, all DOF customers with a WAP telephone will be able to activate MyDOF. TeliaMobile estimates that MyDOF will be offered as a regular service next year.

- This pilot test is a way for us to find out which WAP services our customers are interested in, and obviously also how much they are willing to pay for them, says Jonas Wilhelmsson, business developer at Telia Mobile.

- This co-operation project is a cornerstone in the process of building the mobile information society. A wide range of WAP services will be available to the customers from the beginning. We expect that demand for new services will grow quickly and spur development efforts, says Sara Kullgren, President, Nokia Mobile Phones, Scandinavia.

Telia and Oracle behind unique technology
The technology behind MyDOF has been developed in Sweden by Telia Mobile and Oracle, under the working name Panama. Panama is a platform for portals for mobile terminals, with the focus on WAP. Panama translates existing web material to make it accessible for mobile use, independently of the type of terminal used. By means of a filter, the web material is adapted to the telephone or terminal that is currently requesting the service.

- The telecom industry in the Nordic countries is very advanced, and it was therefor natural for Oracle to locate the Panama project here, says Roland Svensson, Director Product Management, Oracle. The development process is monitored closely by Oracle in the U.S. They expect Panama to become a global success.
