APiON SELECTS BALTIMORE TECHNOLOGIES AS SECURITY PROVIDER FOR WAP-BASED INFRASTRUCTURE PRODUCTS

The WAP Forum, London, September 15, 1999 - APiON, a world leading wireless Internet infrastructure provider, today announced that it has selected Baltimore Technologies (London:BLM) as its security software partner for APiON's range of Wireless Application Protocol (WAP) infrastructure products, including its first-to-market Binnian WAP Gateway.

Security is a pre-requisite for network operators who deliver mobile Internet services to subscribers wishing to make payments, transfer funds and access a variety of secure information services. Baltimore's security products, which provide full strength security for data confidentiality, integrity and user authentication, combined with APiON's ability to deploy state-of-the-art WAP products is a major step in building confidence and trust in wireless services such as mobile e-commerce and online banking.

APiON is the first partner to utilise Baltimore Technologies' new wireless e-security product, W/Secure. The W/Secure SDK is an implementation of the Wireless Transport Layer Security (WTLS) standard which provides securty for WAP systems. W/Secure allows APiON to build full strength security into its Binnian WAP Gateway product. It also enables WAP systems to integrate into the widely deployed world of Public Key Infrastructure (PKI).

"APiON selected Baltimore as our strategic security partner following an extensive worldwide evaluation", commented Denis Murphy, Managing Director APiON. "Baltimore's new W/Secure SDK combines simple high level API with the reliability and trust with which Baltimore is synonymous, allowing us to rapidly enhance our world-leading WAP gateway product".

John Fallon, Director of Technical Marketing Development at Baltimore Technologies, said, " APiON has established a worldwide reputation for being first to market with innovative products as the WAP standard evolves. This partnership with Baltimore will allow APiON to repeat this success by building a business focused security infrastructure. APiON and Baltimore are well placed to work together to facilitate the introduction of PKI to the WAP-base product area."
